The Centre’s staff contributed to a food collection charity

We were very happy to participate in one of the largest charity events in Czechia this year, Sbírka potravin. Thanks to this biannual event, key assistance is provided to those in need, such as people with disabilities, single parents, elderly single households, and homeless people. Many Ukrainian refugees have also benefited from this initiative over the past few years. This year, Sbírka potravin was carried out under the auspices of President Petr Pavel, as well as the European Federation of Food Banks.

Thanks to Sbírka potravin, selected food and pharmacy items are sent directly to non-profit organisations and food aid distribution centres via regional food banks. The partners of the collection are Charita Česká republika, NADĚJE, the Salvation Army, the Silesian Diaconia, the Diaconia of the Evangelical Church of Czech Brethren, and People in Need.

According to the organisers, this round of Sbírka potravin raised a total of 719 tonnes of food and pharmacy items, marking a 15% increase from the previous collection. Food alone accounted for 645 tonnes, equivalent to more than 1,290,000 meals, with a further 74 tonnes made up of hygiene products. More than 2,800 shops and 6,025 volunteers from charitable organisations, shop employees, and the general public took part in the event.

“It is admirable how many people can unite behind a simple yet powerful goal — to help others,” says Aleš Slavíček, Chairman of the Czech Federation of Food Banks. “Sbírka potravin is not just about food, but about hope, solidarity, and dignity. Every donation, every hour of volunteer work means that someone will not have to worry about what they will eat tomorrow. The record result of the collection is a wonderful example of how, when hearts and organisations come together, we can achieve great things.”
