Dreams From Behind Bars

Murat Dilmanov, an art resident with the Prague Civil Society Centre, has created a series of illustrations which he has printed onto people’s backs in support of former political prisoner, Rasul Jafarov.

The series, which includes powerful images depicting life inside the Azeri justice system, will be used as part of Rasul’s upcoming memoirs. Rasul spent 20 months in prison between 2014-16 after he was convicted on charges which are largely seen as fabricated. Amnesty International declared him a prisoner of conscience. As part of a fellowship with the Prague Civil Society Centre, Rasul has written a memoir of his time in jail, outlining conversations he had with fellow inmates, prison authorities and other individuals regarding the current situation in Azerbaijan.

The pictures will be used to promot Rasul’s book, which is due to be released later this year, and to spark discussions about political prisoners and democracy on social media.
